Most of what makes paint last is what happens before the lid comes off. Washing, scraping, filling, sanding, caulking and priming is the boring part, and it is the part that decides whether you are painting again in three years or in ten.

We paint interiors year-round and exteriors through the short window we get up here — realistically late May through September, depending on the year and the overnight temperatures.

Interior

Rooms, ceilings, trim, doors and stairwells. We move and cover what needs covering, fill and sand before we cut in, and do proper two-coat coverage rather than stretching one thin coat over an old colour. Big colour changes get primed.

Exterior and siding

Wood siding, board and batten, soffit, fascia and trim. Everything gets washed and dry before it gets coated, loose material gets scraped back, and bare wood gets primed. We watch the forecast and the dew point — paint that goes on a cold, damp evening does not cure properly no matter what the can says.

Decks, stairs and railings

Stain and sealer on decks, docks, stairs and rails. Pressure treated lumber needs to be dry before it will take anything, which is why a new deck built in June is often better stained the following season. We will tell you if yours is not ready.

Camps and outbuildings

Camp exteriors, sheds, garages, bunkies and trim. If your camp is only visited a few weeks a year, a coat that is kept ahead of the weather is a lot cheaper than replacing rotted boards later.

How late in the year can you paint outside? +

It depends on the product and the overnight lows, not the daytime high. Once nights are dropping near or below about 10°C, most exterior coatings stop curing the way they are supposed to. In practice that puts our exterior season roughly late May to September. We would rather push a job to spring than put a coat on that fails.

Do you supply the paint? +

We can pick it up or you can buy it yourself, whichever you prefer. If you buy it, buy good paint — the labour is the same either way and cheap paint costs you a second coat and a shorter life.

Do you do drywall repairs before painting? +

Yes, and it is usually the right order. Getting the walls sorted out first is the difference between a fresh coat and a genuinely finished room.

Can you paint a camp that is hard to get to? +

Tell us where it is and how you get there. We are used to working off a truck at the end of a bush road. If it is water access only, that changes the plan but not necessarily the answer.
